Indices FAQs

What is an index?

A stock market index is a group of shares that represent a broad portion of the stock market or a specific sector, such as the technology or banking and financial sector. It is a statistical measure that reflects the changes that take place in the financial markets. It reflects the performance of a certain market segment or the whole market.

Stock market indices are primarily used to gauge the performance or investor sentiment in the market or a single segment or sector. Indices provide a benchmark against which investors can measure and compare the performance of individual stocks and their overall portfolios. Indices are also used to create index funds, which allow investors to invest in a basket of stocks that closely track the performance of an index.

The exact number of indices in India is difficult to pinpoint as there are many, but here's what we can tell:

  • NSE Indices, a major index provider in India, manages over 350 indices under the Nifty brand as of January 2024
  • Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) does have other indices with "SENSEX" in the name, such as BSE SENSEX 50 and BSE SENSEX Next 50. These are all based on the main SENSEX but track different numbers of companies.

There are 3 major stock indices in India, namely Nifty50, Sensex and Bank Nifty.

  • Nifty50 is a benchmark index consisting of the weighted average of 50 of the largest publicly traded Indian companies on the NSE
  • Sensex is a benchmark index consisting of top 30 publicly traded Indian companies on the BSE
  • Bank Nifty is a benchmark index consisting of 12 of the major Indian Banking stocks having large capitalization and which are highly liquid
