ICICIdirect Research 11 Oct 2024 DISCLAIMER

Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved acquisition of major defence platforms worth Rs 80,000 crore. This includes the indigenous construction of two nuclear submarines (estimated cost at Rs 45000 crore) and the acquisition of 31 MQ-9B Predator drones from the United States (estimated cost at Rs 35000 crore)

The 2 submarines are a part of 6 nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSN) with a displacement of 6000 tonnes planned under Project 75 Alpha (P-75A). The submarines will be built indigenously at the Navy’s shipbuilding centre at Vizag

Mishra Dhatu Nigam (Midhani) is expected to be the key supplier of materials & other alloys for these submarines while Bharat Electronics (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics (BDL) are likely to be involved in supplying key electronic systems/sub-systems and missiles/torpedoes respectively. As per the media reports, participation from private players (like L&T) is also expected

In case of MQ-9B HALE (High Altitude Long Endurance) drones, these will be assembled in India. US firm General Atomics will be manufacturer along with Bharat Forge as a key partner for some components. Though indigenous content is expected to be low at 30% initially, govt plans to increase this level in future with indigenous weapons
