DEFENCE MINISTRY CLEARS NAVY'S PLAN FOR UNMANNED VESSELS
News: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has given approval to the Indian Navy's plans worth over Rs 2,500 crore to build Extra-Large Unmanned Underwater Vessels (XLUUVs). The underwater vessels would weigh over 100 tonnes and would be equipped with strike capabilities against enemy submarines and surface vessels.

The Indian Navy would be issuing a tender for the project in the next few months, and major shipbuilders like Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL), Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Cochin Shipyard (CSL) are expected to take part in the project. MDL had already issued an expression of interest (EoI) in March 2022 for collaboration with global firms in design, development and construction of XLUUVs. Bharat Electronics (BEL) would also be involved in supply of electronics systems to be fitted in XLUUVs including radars, sensors and other control & communication systems.
