RAILWAYS HAVE BEGUN TALKS WITH DEPARTMENT OF ATOMIC POWER FOR NUCLEAR PLANTS FOR ITS ENERGY REQUIREMENTS
News: Railways have begun talks with department of atomic power for nuclear plants for its energy requirements. The railways need 10 GW of energy by 2030, it plans to buy 3 GW from Hydro and renewable sources, 3 GW from thermal and remaining 4 GW from tie-ups with power distribution companies. The Railway will provide land and promise to offtake power assurance from nuclear powered plants. Earlier Railways and NPCIL had held talks in 2016 however it didn't fructify due to cost factor. IRFC will be tasked to raise funds for these projects.
View: India has ~8.2 GW of nuclear power capacity it aims to reach 100 GW by 2047. NTPC, Tata Power, Adani Group, Jindal power have come forward to develop nuclear power plants in India. NTPC has tied up with NPCIL for 2 GW of Nuclear Power capacity.
