The company, founded in 1986, enjoy the status of a Maharatna company. The company is headquartered in New Delhi and went public in 2007.

On 6 January 2023, the market capitalisation of the company was Rs 41,528.47 crore. It reported consolidated sales of Rs 386784.55 crore at the end of September 2022. The company is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange with the code 532810 and the National Stock Exchange with the code PFC.
